God’s Sense Of Humor

Monday, March 30th, 2009

I was reminded today that God has a sense of humor.  His Bible is full of humorous stories, anecdotes, and situations.  We often think of God as some old dude sitting on a throne with no discernible expression on his face but I suspect that is not the true countenance of God.  We know that Jesus, while on earth, turned water to wine so people could party (I hope responsibly).  He also said “Let the children come to me”.  He picked them up and blessed them.  He probably gave them noogies and blew raspberries on their bellies.  No, somber is not one of my God’s characteristics.  When I pray, I am going to pray to the animated God who said “I have come that they may have life and have it to the fullest”.

Here are three funny encounters with Jesus in the Bible.

Matthew 16 - Jesus tells his disciples “beware the yeast of the pharisees” as a warning against the trouble that “religious” people can cause.  Do the disciples understand this or ponder  this great warning and wisdom?  As a co-worker used to say Hell No.  They decided “it must be because we did not buy any bread that he is saying this”

John 4 - Jesus tells his disciples “I have food to eat that you know nothing about” to which these great and wise theologians reply “could someone have brought him food?”

John 4 - Jesus was talking to the Samaritan woman at the well. It is a lot of work walking to the well drawing water and carrying it home.  In this encounter Jesus talks about the give of salvation in terms of giving living water.  He says “but whoever drinks this the water I give him will never thirst”.  To which the woman replies “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water”
