Dead Shadows is directed by David Cholewa. Here’s the Synopsis.

Dead Shadows tells the terrifying story of a young man, named Chris (Wolfrom), whose parents were brutally killed 11 years ago, on the same day that Halley’s comet could be seen from earth. Tonight, a new comet is appearing and everyone in his building are getting ready for a party to celebrate the event. There’s even an apocalypse theory going around. As the night falls, Chris discovers that people are starting to act strange – and it seems to somehow be connected to the comet. They are becoming disoriented and violent and it doesn’t take long before they begin to mutate into something far beyond this world. In a fight for survival, Chris tries to escape from his building with the help of a gun taunting tenant named John (Fallon) – but will they make it out alive?

Imagine a novel with this opening scene:

Nikki pressed his hands to his head, striving against the heroin shakes. In a steady pour, he watched a limo pull up to the curb. A black window rolled down, revealing Dr. X. Nikki stumbled over.

Taking a white packet from the older, distinguished man, Nikki turned, but stopped short at the parting words from Dr. X. “Kill her.”

The simple words barely registered in Nikki’s mind. “Kill Mary?”

“She’s a risk. Get the priest as well.”

That’s compelling stuff. It’s also the opening to Suite Sister Mary, the climactic song on Operation Mindcrime. Of course, I added a bit extra to give you a feel for the song, but tell me that isn’t great story telling. I dare you.

After twenty-three years, Queensryche’s Operation Mindcrime remains the quintessential concept album. Not only is the story great in it’s cheesy awesomenicity compelling, but thematically far more prescient than any of us could have imagined.

While Operation Mindcrime’s story focuses on street-rat Nikki and his love for the abused nun Mary, the album’s themes tell of corruption and abuse of power. Is anyone out there old enough to remember a time when corruption and abuse of power were more rampant than now?

In a time where it seems virtually every major institution has been, is being, or will soon be rocked by scandal, Geoff Tate’s powerful lyrics ring truer than ever.

For those not familiar with the story of Operation Mindcrime, there is a great wiki on it. The band’s website also has a song-by-song breakdown of the story. For now, just watch this video – and excuse Tate’s failing voice. He’s getting older. Not only is Suite Sister Mary my favorite song, it’s a great story, as is the whole album.

At the same time, there’s always room for traditional beauty. My pretty wife. Music with delightful harmonies. Scenic vistas, forests and fields. Simple stories.

Mama’s Gan made this short film based on The Beatle’s Carry That Weight. It portrays beauty in so many aspects that I had to share it.

Candlelight Stories has a great write-up on the video from a different perspective — the author is in love with the woman in the video, or at least her face. It’s worth reading to hear a different perspective on the same video. How about you? What emotions and themes do you see, hear or feel from the film?

mewithoutYou you started out as your garden-variety Christian-punk band – lots of screaming, loud guitar and simple drums. Good, but not great. Over time, the band’s creativity, intelligent lyrics and energy transcended genre and labeling to where they are just a great band. Who cares if they’re punk, or renfaire-punk as I called their last album. Who cares if they’re a Christian band? Who cares what we call them? They are greatness wrapped in humility, opening their lives for the world to view.

Listen to these songs from the band’s early days until now. Can you hear the progression? Can you feel the passion behind their music? Not many artists rip their flesh and bare their hearts and souls like singer Aaron Weiss. If you like what you hear, let them know on Twitter (@mewithoutYou).

2012 – February 1878

From the director: I set out to make a horror short the way I might have done it as a twelve year old. In fact, the film pretty well sums up my thoughts on what horror films really are, how they build suspense and anticipation through a series of ordinary events and actions viewed slightly askew.

Of course, horror should always have some kind of payoff.

This was filmed entirely without digital effects. It’s all analog like the old days! Lots of fun. I love horror shorts and will try to make another one soon.

Compare this movie to Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter and it’s easy to see why Exit Humanity promises a better experience. The former is driven by action and special effects, while the latter focuses on character and story. The Lincoln movie should be fun, and I look forward to watching it, but Exit Humanity looks like something to get excited about.

Seems kind of bland to me. In my opinion, the band peaked in 2004 with 4:17 am, which is a great album. We’ll see what else is on the album when it comes out.
